“Stibbon draws from the printmaker’s prosaic materials images which are marvellous and compelling, images which expand our imagination and leave us awe-struck” Gill Saunders, Senior Curator (Prints), V&A Museum.
Emma Stibbon, Territories of Print, 1994 – 2019 gives an insight into Stibbon as ‘artist as witness’ to our landscape and environments on the cusp of change: polar regions; volcanoes; deserts; tidal edges coastal and cities in transition urban. Through the alchemy of printmaking Stibbon envelopes us in her experiences with monumental woodcuts and tactile intaglio prints, where volcanic ash is crusted embedded into the printing plate. There is a seriousness that underpins this endeavour, in a combination of craft and emotion that is unflinching, raw and questioning.
Emma Stibbon was born in 1962 in Münster, Germany. She studied for her Fine Art BA at Goldsmiths, University of London; and an MA in Research Fine Art at the Univ. of the West of England, Bristol. Stibbon was elected Royal Academician in 2013.
