“Music has always been an inspirational nourishment for me, particularly the playful improvisations of Baroque and Jazz. ‘Theme and Variation’, a term usually associated with music, is for me an important concept in understanding natural phenomena and human endeavour. The evolutionary process itself is driven by a ubiquitous tendency for spontaneous pattern formation, mitigated by an equally strong tendency for random variation. At its best, ‘Bebop’ is the personification of theme and variation in perfect balance: the simple pleasure of returning to a theme from wild and playful excursions.”
Peter Randall-Page is informed and inspired by the study of natural phenomena and its subjective impact on our emotions. His works are hewn and carved from stone, and cast in bronze, iron and silver. His sculpture, drawing and printmaking is increasingly concerned with the underlying principles determining growth and the forms it produces. In his words “Geometry is the theme on which nature plays her infinite variations and can be seen as a kind of pattern book on which the most complex and sophisticated structures are based.”
Randall-Page has an international reputation through his sculpture, drawings and prints and has undertaken numerous large-scale public commissions. His work is held in major collections including: (UK) Tate, London; Ulster Museum, Belfast; Dulwich Picture Gallery, London; The British Museum, London; The Victoria and Albert Museum; (IE) The British Embassy, Dublin; (USA) Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, Michigan; (AUS) University of Tasmania, Hobart; (DE) Museum Würth, Künzelsau. In 2015 Peter Randall-Page was elected as a Royal Academician.
