Ian Chamberlain – Bounded Space

Bounded Space is part of Ian Chamberlain’s latest body of work on humankind’s basic need for shelter and protection from the elements: domes, hides, sheds and other temporary structures. Here he uses traditional etching. The larger body of work includes detailed pencil drawings, sound and experiments with collodion photography. Whatever his chosen discipline, Chamberlain has a masterly command of line and tone. These are the graphic equivalent to an observed moment in time and are reminders of home, safety and sanctuary.

Chamberlain is building on previous projects recording architectural forms, technological structures and monuments. These include radar stations, the Maunsell Army Sea Forts and the North Atlantic Wall, a fortified defence line of concrete bunkers built by the Nazis along the coastline of continental Europe from 1942-44. Each acts as a metaphor to comment on social and political concerns in a time of perpetual change.

In addition to his studio practice he is Senior Lecturer in M.A Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking, Drawing and Print at The University of the West of England, Bristol, UK. His prints and drawings are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Modern, Bristol Museum and Pallant House Gallery, Chichester.
