The meeting of land and sea is a recurring theme in Emma Stibbon’s work. She is interested in this tidal space as a liminal place of in-between, or a metaphor for the unconscious. “I have worked from locations that look at the powerful effects of sea erosion on geology and the formations that it creates, including Ireland, Dorset and Iceland. I often gather earth materials and add it to my drawing media to convey the sense of physical terrain in the image”. Other locations look at the cut edge of land formations such as the vast marble quarries of Carrara, Italy.
