About Artist

Jo Taylor’s ceramics are modelled by the light with dramatic deep shadows drawing rhythms and curves. There is a grand gesture reminiscent of a Rococo ornament and architectural plasterwork. She works from potters wheel to composing looping constructions in smooth white porcelain and dense black clay.
In her sculptures the making process influences the outcome; the connection with the raw material is intrinsic to the shapes & marks made. Clay pieces are made & marked with tools as the potters wheel rotates until a collection of loops & curls of varying sizes is amassed.

Taylor’s Yunomi – Celadon Series in porcelain and (Noir) in black stoneware have each been moulded to the hand as part of an edition variable of 50 pieces. A yunomi (Japanese) is a form of teacup, typically made from a ceramic material, being taller than wide, with a trimmed or turned foot.

London Art Fair

18 – 31 January

Jo Taylor, ‘After Consort’ and new vessels from this series of porcelain appropriate the form of Sevre porcelain from the 18th Century.  Each is a contemporary reinterpretation of this elegant high-shouldered, voluptuous shape. The surface is embellished with hand formed flourishes in matt, coloured porcelain and fluid brushes of slip that are strike impolite conversations with the material, challenging them into a new articulations.

AUDIO LINK Jo Taylor introduces the ideas and processes behind the making of this new ‘After’ series of vessels.

These and other works by Jo Taylor will be exhibited as part of the London Art Fair 2021 from 18-31 January and in an exhibition ‘An Intimate Distance’ with Craigie Aitchison, Eileen Cooper, and Natasha Michaels at Rabley Gallery in Feb 21.
