In Shutter leaves are poised in a timeless hinterland. In a soft shift from one space to another, their shadows echo past and present. The horizontal breaks allude to a slatted screen. These slats impose a staggering of pace and of the viewer’s experience of the image. This work is rooted in Blackhall’s fascination with Japanese screens called shoji. These translucent screens form a barrier between internal and external worlds, and of particular interest to Blackhall, the intangible space in-between.

Amy-Jane Blackhall’s work emerges from her fascination with the concept of interconnectedness through the physical and spiritual act of making, particularly the repetitive nature of print. Underlying structures are central to her imagery.  She frequently references sacred spaces, archetypal symbols, Oriental art and Eastern ideologies. Recurring themes in her work reflect on how universality has a strong aesthetic appeal, transcending space and time, language and culture.

Blackhall studied Fine Art at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK. After graduating, she trained under master printer, Jack Shirreff at 107 Workshop.  Blackhall shares her studio practice with running her own editioning press, ‘Ink on Paper Press’ in Wiltshire. In 2016 she won the Flourish Award for excellence in printmaking. Her work is held in the following public collections: National Portrait Gallery, London; Rumi Foundation, London; and Chippenham Museum and Gallery, Wiltshire.
