Ian Chamberlain – Bounded Space III

Bounded Space III is part of a broader body of Chamberlain’s work focusing on humanity’s need for protection, shelter and defence, and an individual’s need for safety and habitation. Here the shelter is used as a metaphor, highlighting issues around isolation, boundary and sanctuary. In an incomplete state, the framework is laid bare, heightening a sense of vulnerability and transition

Through drawing and printmaking Ian Chamberlain reinterprets man-made structures as monuments in the landscape. He has a long-standing fascination with technology and architectural forms, especially structures within industry, agriculture, science and the military. Past works include studies of Goonhilly Earth Station, the Lovell Telescope, the Cheshire Maunsell Sea Forts and the Acoustic Sound Mirrors on the South Kent Coast. He uses an inter-disciplinary approach, combining drawn, photographic and hand-printing methods. Etching is an extension of his drawing, interlinking the various processes.

Chamberlain was awarded the Flourish Print Award in 2024.  UK collections include: The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Tate Modern, London; Bristol Museum; Royal West of England Academy, Bristol; Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; The University of Chichester collection; The Ashmolean, Oxford University; and Chippenham Museum, Wiltshire. In addition to his studio practice he is a researcher and Senior Lecturer in MFA Printmaking at The University of the West of England, Bristol, UK.

Folio 25 comprises sixteen fine art prints by sixteen

UK–based artists. Eight sheets are in portrait format,

38 x 28 cm (15” x 11”) and eight sheets are in

landscape format, 28 x 38 cm (11” x 15”).

There are multiple sizes of graphic blocks

and plates, and a selection of different papers, with six

images printed to the edge of the sheet.

Each print has a limited edition of twenty. Ten of each

edition form part of complete folio sets (all sixteen

prints) and ten are available as individual prints. 10%

of each edition is marked AP, one of each edition is

marked HC and another PP
