“I have long been fascinated with the impressive granite ‘Petit Dru’ that towers above the Chamonix Valley in the French Alps. My commitment to represent the dynamic effects of snow and ice on landscape comes from a realization that many glaciated sites will change beyond recognition within my lifetime. As an artist, I find it a challenge to respond to this, and my impulse to draw is that I may act as a witness.”
Through drawing and printmaking Emma Stibbon considers the complexities of extreme environments undergoing transition and change. Often working in collaboration with scientists, Stibbon researches and explores remote locations including the polar regions, volcanic terrains, glaciated sites and coastal environments. Her approach is driven by her wish to understand how human activity and the forces of nature are shaping our surroundings. Her large-scale drawings and prints record the beauty and precariousness of our planet.
Stibbon has participated in several residencies including Arctic Circle, Svalbard (2022); Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park (2016); AIR Antarctica, Scott Polar Research Institute (2013); Albers Foundation, Connecticut (2016); and the British School at Rome (2010). Major collections include: (UK) The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery; The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; (DE) Stadtmuseum, Berlin; (USA) Yale University Art Gallery; University of San Diego. In 2013 Emma Stibbon was elected as a Royal Academician.
