WINNER OF THE SOUTH DOWNS OPEN PRIZE 2024
PETERSFIELD MUSEUM
22 OCTOBER 24 –1 FEBRUARY 25
Petersfield Museum announces Sara Lee is the winner of the South Downs Open 2024!
Sara Lee won for her work ‘Restore’, 2024. Lee writes,
‘Restore is both a reference to the often-reassuring nature of being in outdoor environments and a reminder for us all to be aware of our need to take responsibility for its’ care.’
‘Restore’ was selected by a panel of judges – Alison Crowther, sculptor, Tiffany Francis-Baker, author and illustrator and Louise Weller, curator.
The prize is a solo exhibition at Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery and we look forward to working with @petersfieldmuseum on her future exhibition.

“I am in the midst of walking and working from the South Downs Way as part of a series that connects the two great chalk uplands of the south and the coastal path between. I am interested in the historic context of these ancient paths and how they connect with our lives in a contemporary setting when our landscapes are under such threat.
Restore is both a reference to the often reassuring nature of being in outdoor environments and a reminder for us all to be aware of our need to take responsibility for it’s care” Sara Lee
“Sara Lee walks and gathers, sometimes extensive pathways. These are not journeys to be conquered and documented, they are space and time inhabited. The ‘being in’ the landscape a conduit of thought and experience” Meryl Ainslie
My practice involves walking in and working from the land, followed by extended studio-based work. My images are a response to the ephemeral nature of the land and question our profound relationship with it, especially at this time of ominous environmental change. I predominantly work with drawing and print, including pastel and woodblock using techniques borrowed from the Japanese tradition.
Born in Wales, I live and work in London. I studied at Ravensbourne and Central Schools of Art. Represented by Rabley Gallery, I exhibit widely and my work is held in public and private collections internationally, including Pallant House Gallery, Tama Collection, Japan and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
