“I know the tune the image hums though I cannot recall its name” JP
Overwhelmed by the mass of information, messages, expectation and diverse pressures impinging upon our lives there is a yearning for peace and freedom. For Jeff Powell drawing is one way of reaffirming ones humanity.
Powell crafts his drawings with a masterly use of materials, layering pastel colours into crisp forms to create his subtle hues, and counterbalances them with formal lines and sometimes surprisingly free, undulating masses. He breathes modernism, but in a language of his own.
Uncertainties lead him to make work, the logic of which lies outside what might be expected of a clear linear development. He is striving for a synthesis, less preordained than might emerge from an objective figurative study, he extracts and abstracts the essential from his daily experience, roughed by shapes and objects near his home in Cornish coast.
Born in 1947, Jeff Powell studied architecture at Bournemouth College of Art in the late sixties. His career has spanned many creative fields from architecture, illustrator and designer in the music industry, signwriter, painter, printmaker, ceramics technician – but his obsession has and always will be drawing.
