Sadie Tierney – Knivsflåfosseno

When spring arrives in the mountains small cascades of water become waterfalls. The roaring sound that echoes in the landscape is the backdrop for life renewed. In her woodcut, Knivsflåfosseno, Sadie Tierney is drawn to the Norwegian Fjords that are part of her heritage. She uses the woodgrain of her printing block and expressive woodcutting marks to capture this dynamic energy. Mimicking the flow, found wild pony hair has been applied in the process to make an embossed surface in the paper by the printing press.

Sketching and drawing on location in the tradition of an English landscape painter and printmaker, Sadie Tierney explores objects and places where form is linked to emotion and metaphor with a contemporary edge. She is an accomplished colourist, often gathering the palette of the changing light at dusk or dawn into her images in fields and blends of strong colour.

Tierney studied at the Royal College of Art, London. Her work is in numerous collections including: The Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester and the National Museum in Gdansk, Poland.
