Nana Shiomi’s thoughts and ideas are played out within the graphic clarity of her woodcuts, anchoring her subjects on the ochre boards of a stage that recedes in perspective against the red, wood-grained backdrop. This perfect environment makes each woodcut immediately recognisable as a ‘Shiomi’ and is enduringly adaptable to the concepts it envelops.
Nana Shiomi was born in Japan in 1956. Arriving in the UK to study printmaking at the Royal College of Art in 1989. She has lived between London and Japan for nearly 35 years.
This exhibition will include rare early prints from the artists archive.

“Every morning, I open my window. I see my usual view and feel relieved, or I see an unusual view, and my heart is pounding. Sometimes, the view is a surprise, and sometimes it is familiar. It is always a thrill! Today becomes a yesterday tomorrow. Time seems to be going in one direction. However, I think we can come and go in any direction. We are born to collect our own stories.”
“What have I spent half my life trying to represent here in London? I am not a prolific printmaker, but in the last thirty-five years, I have produced about two hundred works, including One Hundred Views of Mitate. Looking back at past work, I think of my stubborn formal composition and of placing icons on the stage where the outlandish icons appear.
Each piece has a single story to tell, and I have put on stage the icons I thought best told that story. I wanted to share the small wonders and the truths of this world, what I had discovered in the daily subtleties of my life and my work. With each new work I was so excited about making the piece that I never thought about its relationship to the works before and after. But now, having reviewed all two hundred or so pieces, it is pleasing to discover that they are separate stories, but overlapping and flowing like a single river” Nana Shiomi
